“Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day” (Colossians 2:16) This is because what was written just previously, namely because of the work that Christ has already done and the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. In other words, if we will walk in Him, He trusts us. If we continue to seek Him, he will reveal truth. If we abide in Him, He will guide us.
“Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize…” (Colossians 2:18a) Don’t allow others to divert your attention away from the head, Christ, through empty chatter, deceit, persuasion or any other means. ”
“Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!” (Colossians 2:21) “Meaning either the ordinances concerning touching, tasting, and handling, which bring destruction and death on those that use the items (meats or other foods), and comply with them (their ordinances), in order to obtain righteousness and life.” In truth, the using of them (meats or other foods) cannot defile the man, nor an abstinence from them sanctify him, or commend him to God; they only relate to this present life, and will cease with it, and can have no manner of influence on the spiritual and eternal concerns of men: and besides, the ordinances concerning them are not of God, but are after the commandments and doctrines of men.” (John Gill)
